Membres de la Librairie l’Androgyne

This black and white photograph was taken at Librairie l’Androgyne in the early 1980s, when it was a gathering place and hub of political activity for Montreal’s LGBTQ2S+ community. The books and magazines are clearly visible, but the photographer focused primarily on the people present. We were able to identify Suzanne Downs, the new coordinator, leaning on Paul Keenan’s shoulders. This photograph caught our attention because it accurately depicts how the bookstore operated at the time (1976-1982), as all the people visible in the image were members of the collective that ran the bookstore.
